When OpenAI’s ChatGPT opened its virtual doors to the public, the artificial intelligence bot received widespread attention – some were astounded by how quickly it generated content while others found it to be inconsistent and factually incorrect.

On Tuesday, ChatGPT Pro’s pricing plans were revealed. So far, the AI tool has remained free, but it should roll out a paid version very soon. Users on Twitter shared screenshots of the plan’s monthly pricing – set at $42 per month (Rs. 3,429).

What Meta’s chief said about ChatGPT

While ChatGPT continues to soar in terms of user base and value, not everyone’s impressed. Meta’s chief artificial intelligence scientist recently called ChatGPT “not particularly innovative” during a Zoom gathering last week, ZDNet reported.

“In terms of underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not particularly innovative,” said Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist. LeCun went on to say that ChatGPT is “nothing revolutionary, although that’s the way it’s perceived in the public.”

LeCun’s criticism stems from the fact that many research labs and companies have built similar AI tools in the recent past. Essentially, LeCun wanted to highlight that ChatGPT is not one-of-its-kind.

“OpenAI is not particularly an advance compared to the other labs, at all,” said LeCun, while adding that companies like Google and Meta have similar technology as well.

In addition, LeCun noted that the underlying programme on which ChatGPT is built (OpeniAI’s GPT-3) was created from various technologies built by different companies over the years. For instance, ChatGPT uses Transformer architectures that were developed by Google.

LeCun was speaking at a talk hosted by the Collective[i] Forecast. Not too long, reports started surfacing about how Google is worried about ChatGPT’s internet takeover. LeCun spoke about why Google and Meta haven’t build similar public AI systems. “The answer is, Google and Meta both have a lot to lose by putting out systems that make stuff up,” LeCun added.

Another Big Tech giant, Microsoft has consistently supported OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a “multiyear, multibillion dollar investment to accelerate AI breakthroughs [that would be] broadly shared with the world.” Reports suggest that Microsoft has poured $10 billion into OpenAI with this deal.

ChatGPT was made available to the public in November, 2022. Since then, it has kickstarted conversations surrounding the ethics of AI that are able to generate vast amounts of written content in a matter of seconds – especially in academic and creative circles.
